Be warned this will be a rant.
There is nothing I hate more than a professional writer or editor coming along and stating that someone’s writing is just plain horrible. I feel that there are people out there who would like make every fantasy a knight and dragon one, every fiction a Grisham novel and every SF a star wars rip off.
I would and could excuse critiques on grammar, spelling and improper word use. For an Indie writer with no resources, writing after work, things do get missed. There are also times when we rush a project before we proof it completely. Yes these are signs that we are not professionals. These are also signs that we do not have extensive budgets for professional editors. But we make do. We the Indie writers go back and correct, re-write and keep our work on an improving slope.
Our writing is our passion and that can be seen on how we are willing to take our work which has been criticized and edit it again. Even to the point of putting off our current story.
You may ask yourself well what does this have to do with anything. The point is clear and it happened to me as I am sure that it has happened to many of you.
My short teaser, character snapshot, was critiqued. And I pretty much agreed with the reviewer. I had rushed it and I admitted it. I took it down and fixed grammar and spelling. Then came review number two, clearly someone who was just trying to start something but still he gave me a clear good review though it was in spite of the other.
Marcus the person who reviewed my first work that I commented on to being correct and I apologized for the mess I had released the first time took the second review in stride. Yes he did not miss a beat in insulting me by claiming that it could be me who would dare to make another account on Amazon in order to post reviews. Though the insult did not stop there. The facts as Mr. Marcus pointed out that my work was just plain awful. The writing was terrible and that I would have to change my writing drastically before he would give me a thumbs up. Then in a glib last statement he quoted the point that my teaser was just four pages long knowing full well that it was an eleven page teaser.
I have since edited the work to make it more standard and re-worked the grammar and spelling. Though I refuse to put my writing back in the box. As I have stated countless times I am trying something new with the Amber Light series and I will not stop. I will improve the writing for there are some rules in composition that can not be ignored. But to revert back into a confined style, I think not.
As for this review and the reviewer Marcus. I gave him my pound of flesh as atonement. I conceded that the project of the teaser was rushed and have since fixed it. If he does not like the writing because it does not match any form he is used to reading or can not handle reading something in a new style. That fault lies in him. I am writing to challenge the reader into new territory. I am giving something new to experience and that is what Indie writers bring to the table. That is what Reviewers seem to forget. We are a new flavor and just as I got used to and even like the flavor of green tea ice-cream. I think readers will eventually be able to like the writing for what it is and review it as such. Though there will always be the pros out there, readers who are in fact editors and professional writers in real life ready to tear down a new form. To them I say have a coke and a smile and STFU.
All comments are welcomed but as you can see even I did not spell out bad words.
Addendum : After much consideration of a comment to this post. I found it to not really add to the work and was a stroke of my ego in order to allow a marketing link. While I have no problem in the way that people make money. I do have one where it would belittle the work I put in.
