For  some people, snagging the last sun lounger is the zenith of their holiday experience. However, I think there is nothing quite like discovering a new bookshop. Your eyes meet the fading text of a first edition across a crowded street, and you know it is love. During my travels I have found various literary oases over the years, and here are my top choices (in no particular order).

1. The American Book Center, Amsterdam

Did you forget to pack a book? Was the lure of the trashy airport novel not quite enough?
