A few days ago while browsing Facebook, I saw a post one of my friends had shared. It asked why “Fifty Shades of Grey” is such a bad book for people to be reading. It acknowledged the fact that the entire relationship is based on abuse, but questioned why anyone would actively discourage the reading of it. I have never read the book, but know from talking to people who have and reading the articles that it presents an obviously abusive relationship as BDSM, which I also know nothing about but have been assured is a consensual thing. I agree with people who say that this is a bad thing, that it should not be celebrated, but I’ve been thinking for a while about why.
