Today my small Spanish reading group starts Don Quixote. With chapter one read and reread I can already see something about this story that few ever mention or if it is mentioned I have seen very few postings on it. Even in when I read parts of it in University I did not come up with the opinion that I am starting to build now.
I do not see it as a man longing for the times gone by, or even a man trying to be a knight errant when the knights no longer exist. The first chapter gives so much more than such a mundane view. There is the man who gets so engrossed by the stories that he reads that his reality fades into the stories. He starts to live them, to be one with them. When the chapter reads on how he lost his mind and forgot about all his daily duties and even sold his land to buy more books on the subject I see something we in the modern world miss.
Reading is fading or actually evolving. Even here you see people stating that they will not read particularly long posts. You see people losing the drive to read whereby the more you read the faster you can read and the more you can retain. There is an inherent need of mine to insure that my son loves to read. And not just read what is fun and easy but what is hard.
It is one of the reasons why my novel Love
is written as it is, to call back to the classics, to the greats. Until next time I leave you with the call from what Don Quixote is teaching me. Read, enjoy reading, and get so engrossed in the reading that you can become the character, let nothing take that away from you.
